100+ Resume Action Verbs That ATS Systems Love

A comprehensive list of resume action verbs organized by function — with guidance on how to use them to write ATS-friendly bullets that also impress recruiters.

Action verbs are the starting point of every strong resume bullet. They signal agency, ownership, and impact — qualities ATS systems are configured to find and recruiters are trained to look for. Weak verbs ("was responsible for", "helped with", "worked on") bury your actual contributions.

Why Action Verbs Matter for ATS

ATS systems score resume bullets partly based on impact-indicating language. Verbs like "built", "led", "reduced", "increased", "optimized", and "launched" signal accomplishment-driven content. Passive constructions like "was responsible for" score lower because they do not clearly indicate what the candidate actually did.

Starting bullets with strong action verbs also forces specificity — which makes bullets more keyword-rich and more compelling to human reviewers.

Action Verbs by Function

Leadership and Management

Directed, Led, Managed, Supervised, Oversaw, Mentored, Coached, Delegated, Championed, Spearheaded, Coordinated, Guided, Established, Initiated

Use for roles with direct reports or functional ownership. "Led a team of 8 engineers" is stronger than "Managed engineering work".

Building and Creating

Built, Developed, Designed, Architected, Engineered, Created, Implemented, Launched, Deployed, Constructed, Programmed, Coded, Produced

Ideal for technical roles. "Built a REST API handling 2M daily requests" is more ATS-relevant than "Created backend services".

Improving and Optimizing

Optimized, Improved, Enhanced, Streamlined, Accelerated, Reduced, Eliminated, Simplified, Automated, Transformed, Upgraded, Refactored, Resolved

Pair with a metric. "Reduced deployment time by 60%" is both a strong verb and a measurable outcome.

Analyzing and Researching

Analyzed, Investigated, Evaluated, Assessed, Researched, Identified, Diagnosed, Audited, Measured, Tracked, Monitored, Benchmarked, Forecasted, Modeled

For analyst and data roles. "Analyzed 3 years of transaction data to identify fraud patterns" names method and outcome.

Communicating and Presenting

Presented, Communicated, Authored, Documented, Reported, Briefed, Advised, Recommended, Proposed, Pitched, Negotiated, Published, Wrote

"Presented quarterly analytics findings to C-suite stakeholders" is stronger than "Reported on data".

Growing and Scaling

Grew, Expanded, Scaled, Increased, Boosted, Maximized, Generated, Drove, Accelerated, Doubled, Tripled

Ideal for growth and sales roles. Always pair with a metric: "Grew organic traffic by 47% over 6 months".

Collaborating

Collaborated, Partnered, Coordinated, Aligned, Integrated, Facilitated, Contributed

Always clarify the teams involved. "Collaborated with product, design, and engineering teams" is specific; "worked with other teams" is not.

Problem-Solving

Resolved, Solved, Diagnosed, Troubleshot, Debugged, Mitigated, Prevented, Investigated, Corrected, Remediated

"Diagnosed and resolved a database deadlock causing 12-hour production outage" names a real problem and a real action.

Strategy and Planning

Defined, Designed, Planned, Strategized, Formulated, Prioritized, Roadmapped, Forecasted, Proposed

"Defined quarterly OKRs for the analytics team aligned to revenue growth targets" is keyword-rich and specific.

Sales and Revenue

Closed, Acquired, Generated, Sold, Negotiated, Converted, Retained, Renewed, Upsold, Won

Always pair with a number. "Closed ₹1.2Cr in enterprise contracts in Q3" is a complete, ATS-strong bullet.

Common Weak Verbs to Replace

Replace With
Was responsible for Led, Owned, Managed
Helped with Contributed to, Supported
Worked on Built, Developed, Implemented
Was involved in Participated in, Collaborated on
Made Created, Developed, Designed
Got Achieved, Attained, Secured

The Complete Bullet Formula

Action verb + what you did + tool/method used + outcome/metric

Example: Automated nightly data pipeline reconciliation using Apache Airflow, reducing manual processing time from 4 hours to 12 minutes.

Every element serves a purpose: the verb signals ownership, the tool names an ATS keyword, and the metric gives the recruiter a concrete result.
