The Best Resume Format for ATS Systems (Templates Included)

Columns? Graphics? PDF vs Word? We break down exactly which resume formats pass the ATS scan and which ones get you automatically rejected.

You have the skills. You have the experience. But if your resume format is unreadable, none of that matters.

Incorrect formatting is one of the top reasons qualified candidates get rejected. Here is your guide to the perfect ATS-Friendly Resume Format.

The Golden Rules of Formatting

1. No Columns (Usually)

While modern parsers are getting better at reading two-column layouts, many older systems still read left-to-right, across the entire page. This means your "Skills" section on the right might get mashed into your "Experience" section on the left, creating gibberish.

Verdict: Single-column is the safest bet.

2. No Graphics or Icons

An ATS reads text. It does not "see" images. If you put your skills in a graph (e.g., a progress bar showing "90% Python"), the ATS reads nothing. Lists are always better than graphics.

3. Use Standard Headings

Don't get creative with section titles.

  • Use: "Experience", "Work History", "Education", "Skills".
  • Avoid: "Where I've Been", "My Professional Journey", "Toolbox".

The ATS uses these headers to categorize your data. If it doesn't recognize the header, it skips the section effectively ignoring your experience.

4. File Type: PDF vs. DOCX

For years, Word docs were preferred. Today, PDF is standard—but only text-based PDFs.

  • How to test: Open your PDF. Can you highlight and copy the text? If yes, it's readable. If you can't select specific words, it's an image, and the ATS can't read it.

Can I Use Color?

Yes! ATS systems generally strip formatting to analyze raw text, so color doesn't hurt your score. However, keep it professional for the human reader. Dark blue or charcoal accents are great; neon green is not.

Need a Template?

Don't risk it. Use a clean, single-column layout to ensure your resume is 100% compliant with major hiring platforms like Taleo and Greenhouse.
